‘Personal development
and planning’ tutorial notes to complete and discuss for the new term
Please prepare some written
notes here in the space provided – do
this on the computer not in biro etc – this will help to evolve your new
thinking for your new level 5 and 6 proposals. Bring it along to tutorials. It
will help aid the sessions. Then from this, compose a new ‘constellations and confluences’
document for Sept 14. This will kick start your formal Proposal and new
negotiated briefs
Write extensively for
each question – but freely with notes – you are not being judged on your
written style or grammar – so try some automatic thought – jot down as much as
you can – to then add detail to it later ?
1. Have any key themes of your current creative practice
become more consolidated this term – if so, what are they ?
2. Are you now looking to develop deeper levels of research
and practice - and if so how ?
3. What artists, authors and reading are you preparing for
summer research material ? – especially subject matter and reading that links
directly to your personal creative interests and themes as a practitioner. List
these
4. Is the content, intent and philosophy of your making
deciding the medium, techniques and process you use – or the other way around ?
Have you considered this ?
5. Is there a particular medium and skill you wish to
explore deeper in order to make your practice more sophisticated
6. However , What do we mean by sophistication in visual
language – discuss ?
*Over the summer
compose a new ‘constellations and
confluences’ document for Sept 14.

Jep
Gambardella, a 65-year-old journalist and once promising novelist, spends his
easy life among Rome s high society in a swirl of rooftop parties and
late-night soirees. But when he learns of the death of his friend s wife a
woman he loved as an 18-year-old his life is thrown into perspective and he
begins to see the world through new eyes. A dazzling, dizzying, mesmerising and
hypnotic cinematic tour-de-force that has drawn comparisons with Italian greats
such as La Dolce Vita and La Notte.

X is a Door of Perception
''Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across
thousand of miles and all the years you have lived.'' Helen Keller
Question: Why is something SPECIAL ? contemplate how an
object can hold emotion or intrigue ? Muse on these questions when you handle
your object.
T. S. Eliot said; ''We shall not cease from exploration -
And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And
know the place for the first time.''
Nb *It is important
that you print out your UNIT X book and BRING it in to MMU
‘X’ BRIEF
Using the Special Collections and the slide library archive as your research starting point you are asked to consider an object (
artefact , image, a book , a design era, or group of objects ) within this collection
and develop your initial research around the history / place / origins of this
/ these objects.
The object will be a CATALYST
for opening new DOORS of Perception and investigation toward possible other
collections and archives etc . This can be very broad in its interpretation; it
is up to you to create the parameters.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR:
? also see Learning Outcomes ( LO )
What we are looking for is not only an exciting set of
visual outcomes but a strong body of research that illustrates the journey you
have undertaken throughout the duration of the project.
Solid diverse research, what is research ? ( see MM ) Sketchbook,
worksheets, diary Log/ journals of visits and meetings, material samples /
maquettes where necessary good resolution, focus in outcome, clear articulation
of ideas.
Consider how you can expand
the knowledge of an object ? Take the object out
of its 'collection' and put
it into context…where does it come from, who made it
and why? is it functional,
decorative or of a conceptual nature ? From these
initial enquiries consider
how you will begin to document it.
We want you
to make contact with other
museums or galleries to look behind
the scenes in other
collections, how do you go about making these
connections? Document your
findings visually and verbally in sketchbooks
and in your blog - keep a LOG
diary of events and meetings and visits
make it VISUAL and upload to
your blog
It is important that early on
in the project you make a choice re what you are
aiming towards re final
outcome (obviously this does not need to be physically
realized) as this will give
your project a structure to work within. Presentation
of the project outcomes in
the Spring should be in the form of a power point, this can be
backed up with samples where
appropriate.
Outcomes to consider: site
specific: you could look at the interior or exterior
the library, it could be a
wall piece, a floor piece, a window etched
space or
glass piece ? …if looking at
these potential areas back up your investigations
with appropriate research,
look at artists / designers who work in a site
specific manner.
For example: Susan Hiller, Christian Boltanksi, Rushton
Aust, Alice Kettle, Michael Brennand Wood, David
Hockney, Caroline Bartlett,
Elizabeth Ballet, Jeanette Sendler, Andrea Stokes,
Linda Florence, ….there are
many more
You are encouraged to work in
small groups throughout the project’s duration
for example at the outset
with research, consider what you may want to focus
on and if there is anyone in
your group who may have similar interests. We
will form your PEER GROUPS
around common interest re project focus and
subject matter. Decide
subject soon and email them to DR X (Mack)
