Task 1: From Tuesday 27th to Tuesday 11th Oct Seminar 

A; HOME / The Domestic: Select an object ( 2d or 3d ) an object that suggests a memory or a time or sense of place - respond to this object with drawing in inks and charcoal and paint Chalk etc use black and white - maybe colour later after 20 or so studies  - make notes - improvise

B; MUSEUM / GALLERY OBJECT Select a Museum or Gallery Object or even an Antique shop object in a staged environment - NOT AT HOME but a setting and a context where the object is classified as 'special' and therefore is 'displayed' and on view. Draw the quality or history that draws you to the object / Image - ask what do you admire in this object, Its history and its story ? - imagine ? make notes

Draw several objects from the above or be specific. The AIM is that you EXPERIMENT and cultivate your Visual Language so do consider and experiment with a variety of marks and scales and paper sizes and paper surfaces as discussed this week - look to communicate feeling texture and meaning ? make notes, Prose etc 

Plan for next week: Tuesday 4th Oct SELF DIRECTED MUSEUM Drawing & OR Self directed in Studio drawing - dependent on what work you need to progress and what objects you have developed

Summer Brief 2011 


D U E TS  BRIEF  (for those without an area specific brief )


Consider the meaning and concepts of the word DUET and the word DIPTYCH ( especially in Art ) use a thesaurus and research the various possibilities and meanings of these concepts and how they have materialized in many forms in the natural environment and in human life and of course in the Arts , the 'mirror to life' ?


( A mirror image is indeed the childs first experienced 'self ' Duet - the self reflected portrait ! -  also see 'Anima and Animus' theory by Carl Jung )


A Mirror - your self and a pen or brush and a Camera, may be a good place to start this project work - do a quick series of fast self portraits - ( see Frieda Khalo and the young, much missed, Francesca Woodman's photography )


Make a sketchbook and Journal or sheets of drawings and visual studies for September - no expectation on amount or on quality levels from us at this point  - just enjoy being experimental and investigative with drawing and making your sketchbook - expand this into three dimensions or photography and explore materials if you wish.


Research relationships between two things' be they material organic object or human ?


Mind Map - a range of these things, ideas, stories, people or relationships in the real world or in the fictional mythic imaginary world .... famous duets - things that work as a pair or in symmetry


Consider:


The idea of complementing pairs by juxtaposition


The Idea and aesthetics of  complementary colours in Art textiles, craft and Fashion - Objects and Duets


The idea of complementing by a 'like for like' matched harmony ?


OR the idea of complementing by duality -and opposites ? different elements or traits making one harmonious pair - a holistic unity


For Example read about the theory of Anima and Animus by Carl JUNG and Munch's Alpha and Omega  


Look at Morecombe and Wise .... celebrate or deconstruct things !


Be broad and focus on an area that fascinates you


Remember this is a project to enjoy and to get you thinking and making experimental work in any media you feel strongest, to express your ideas and findings - make it personal and autobiographical if you wish - then we can also get to know you a little bit more

'International Times' along with OZ  ('it') was the ground breaking underground Arts, Music,and Left field Politics MAG/Zeen of its era 67 - 74- and was a huge cultural influence on design / Print and Vinyl sleeve artwork - many of the writers and Graphic designers who worked on i.t also were involved with the Punk explosion which was about to occur in 1975/6 - Punk and Stiff records etc

'To be and to have' One of my all time personal favorites - the beautiful and simply real observations of the child and the teacher - set in a tiny rural French school 'Etre et Avoir' ( read some reviews) this is our special extra daytime showing (  one of our Christmas Feel good Kino4 next week Tuesday meeting 2.15 pm during the day - as well as Leon later ) 

   'TO BE AND TO HAVE' - is described as Inspiring, meditative, the portrait of a   teacher about to leave his class to retire - a Surprising Film.

This is the image / and camera some of you have asked me about - Canon G 7 ....... I recommend it without hesitation this image was taken with a G9 in 2007 but Ive since purchased a second hand G7 from ebay £170 and that generally performs as well as the G9 or a Nikon D80 and 90 which is 5 times the price. Book Club

Another all time favorite book of mine and excellent for student projects in the past  - the great and strange 'Steppenwolf' by Herman Hesse  / here is a Penguin sourced Synopsis

first things first manifesto 2000 and 1964

OK I thought it was good timing to load up some more vital things and names you need to put in the Bachelor of Arts bank.'first things first' This is an important historical design document, the original is from 1964 - a manifesto originated by Ken Garland - please read it and research its intentions and its signatories - see the original 1963 version above (it will enlarge ) and then the 2000 later newly signed one here http://www.emigre.com/EMag.php?issue=52 at Emigre magazine where there was a lot of 'reader' debate at the time.


One of my academia heroes is Sheila Levrant de Bretteville Professor of Graphics at YALE University in America. She teaches intelligent and socially aware' design and has a healthy non compliance to purely Corporate or Commercial requirements - a design outlook that is in her words 'more egalitarian and participatory' she signed the updated 2000 manifesto document as did many others such as Simon Esterson Vince Frost Milton Glaser Jessica Helfland Rick Poyner Jonathan Barnbrook and Teal Triggs a highly respected UK academic and designer - look at these writers and designers - their ethos and design backgrounds - there is some info on De Bretteville here and Ken Garland here
